Improving Writing

On my second placement one French classroom was covered in useful vocabulary. I sat there taking note of every piece of coloured paper in that room and set my mind on replicating the displays in my own classroom one day. The problem is that the room in which I'm mainly based is a room where German and Spanish are taught too. After chatting about this with a fellow NQT, she came up with a single side of paper that contained excellent language that pupils need in order to improve their writing and speaking.

After I provided all the vocab from the walls surround the class, my good friend @Gem_Quinn expertly adapted it into this masterpiece. It really makes it easy for the pupils to find what they need in order to aid their writing while being colourful and engaging enough to make the students actually want to use it. A balance that isn't the easiest to achieve!

Every pupil has a copy of this glued into the front cover of their book and the sheet covers a whole range of vocab and structures that we expect pupils of all abilities to be using in their work. I've also found that this helps pupils to start using terminology for aspects of language more frequently and accurately. This has in turn allowed me to comment on adding intensifiers or connectives for example while pupils are keen to include as much 'Fancy' language as they can! The copy attached here is for KS4 and I have a scaled down version for my KS3 classes.

UPDATE: Spanish one is also added below. I haven't used this one myself yet but will be from September!

UPDATE 2: Now available in German thanks to the wonderful Mrs Wiseman!
